James Minno Boomsma, 76, Randolph, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, Friday, February 2, 2018, after a year long courageous battle with ALS.

The family will greet relatives and friends for a visitation and celebration of life from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Second Christian Reformed Church, 332 Tamarack Street, Randolph. The funeral service for Jim will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Christian Reformed Church with visitation on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service, Pastor Keith Buist officiating.

Jim was born the son of Nick and Josie (Postma) Boomsma on September 21, 1941 in Columbia County. He was united in marriage to Justine N. DeVries, on October 11, 1963. His devotion to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was demonstrated in how he lived. His biggest source of pride and joy was his family. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren dearly. Jim enjoyed working with his hands, completing any fix-it project, several woodworking and remodeling projects, and taxidermy. He was well known for his willingness to help others when asked. Jim enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors and hunting. He planted a garden every year and would share his produce with family and friends. He also loved to plant flowers. His motto was “there is no wrong place to plant a flower”.

He found satisfaction taking part in the Randolph community. His life work included the Randolph Do It Center, from where he retired, 4X Corporation, Randolph Concrete Products, and the Randolph Police Department. He served in the community as a village trustee for several years before being elected Randolph village president in 2013. Jim led over 1,000 students as a Hunter Safety instructor for over 20 years, held the position as elder and deacon at his church, and served as board member at Randolph Christian School.

Jim will be remembered by many as he greeted them with a smile. He had a way of making everyone he met feel special and important.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Justine Boomsma; his children Lisa (Dave) Pickhardt of Randolph, Deb (Brian) Cupery of Randolph, Pam (Bill) Otte of Juneau, Peggy (Kyle) Post of Markesan, and Don (Leah) Boomsma of Lakeville, MN; 14 grandchildren: Jonathan and Holly Pickhardt, Brittany, Seth, and Zachary Cupery, Trae, Tobin, Rebekah, and Symeon Otte, Cody and MaKinna Post, and Elam, Lucas, and Caleb Boomsma. He is further survived by sisters-in-law Helen Boomsma and MaryAnn Burschet, brother-in-law Jack Weinberger, and brothers-and-sisters-in-law John and Pat Pothof and Al and Cindy DeVries.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son James Donald in 1966, grandchild Baby Cupery in 1999, 5 brothers; John, Robert, Sam, Harry, and Don, and 4 sisters; Dorothy James, Jess Oliver, Alberta Wiersma, and Clara Weinberger.

A special thanks to his horse shoeing buddies for their friendship over the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jim’s name may be directed to the Hunter Safety Education Program, ALS Association, Second Christian Reformed Church, Randolph Christian School, and/or Prison Ministries.
